Jiminy Cricket

At the moment my conscience is not allowing me to blog. I have to take the GRE at the end of next month. According to Baron's diagnostic test I won't break 1000 (for those of you who don't know...that's NOT a good look). I must relearn the formulas for area of a circle, area of a triangle, and basic 7th grade math. I must also learn random vocabulary words I will NEVER use.
I have a shitload to write about, unfortunately the graduate admissions offices don't want to hear about my obsession with You Tube and a certain alcoholic West Indian. Nope, they want to hear all about my latest reading material, my condensed life story, and the great works of literature I'm conjuring at the moment. Add to that a 30 page sample of my brilliance. For some reason sending them a link to my blog isn't acceptable.
None of this includes the actual applications that I have to submit between mid December and early January in order to be thrust back into a state of brokosity with little to no health insurance (forget about dental) for the next two years while I pursue an MFA in Creative Writing, which by the way will do nothing to make me employable!
So basically what I'm trying to say is that every time I attempt to participate in a blog related activity (reading, writing, etc.) I am quickly reminded that I am on a strict deadline and I gotta get all the aforementioned shit done, and done well in the next six weeks. If I'm blogging, I'm not studying, writing, or applying and Jiminy says we can't have that.

GOD BLESS YOU, girl, for getting an MFA!!(or may the Universe, or Allah, or Yaweh, or whoever is in charge of this crazy world bless you)
I go round and round, thinking of going to grad school. MFA in creative writing is the degree I secretly want, but it is low on the totem pole because of the high expense, low return aspect... But who cares??!! You can get a job teaching. You can write yourself a kick ass resume with your MFA and get a job in the business world.

I did the math GRE long ago and it was annoying, but I did well enough to get in. I think the main thing about a GRE is to make sure you didn't get one of those mail-order diplomas or similar.

My experience was that the GRE only made the difference in whether I went to Michigan or MSU. Whether I got money free as a "research assistant" or as a "teaching assistant." Turned out I could get into both, but Michigan didn't give me a TA, but MSU did.

I think that if you want an MFA, you should apply to a half-dozen universities and even if you blow the GRE, you'll get into at least one. Part of this is supply and demand. If you have a sucky GRE, and the university in question has a dip in enrollment, you'll be able to get in anyhow. If you have a rockin' GRE and the university in question is overcrowded, you might not get in. So, select multiple schools where you'd feel proud to have their sheepskin on your wall, and apply to all of them.

in regards to vocab, learn the latin and greek roots. this will help you look at a word and make a fairly accurate guess as to it's meaning.

good luck

GRE=fucking retarded.

But--you'll be taking it after they've had the format changes. They used to basically grade you after the first five questions on the math, but now it's done so that it goes up and or down depending on your answers w/ difficulty level, giving you a better shot at a better score.

I took the GRE in June and I'm going to take it again....hopefully i'll do better this time around.

Good luck!
